The Jagex staff impersonation scam is a scam in which the scammer pretends to be a Jagex staff member in order to trick players into telling the scammer their passwords. This violates both the 'Scamming' and 'Jagex staff impersonation' rules under Honour. A similar scam in which the scammer tries to gain knowledge of other players' passwords through trickery is the Password Scam.

Example[]

  • Scammer: We need to check if your account has broken rules.
  • Scammer: Give us your password or you'll be banned.

If these players really were Jagex moderators, they would have a gold crown next to their name and they would never ask for your password at any time, so you can report these people immediately for saying this, even if they are Jagex staff members.

This is only one form of the Jagex Staff Impersonation Scam. Another form is this;

  • Scammer: Congratulations! You have been chosen to be a Jagex moderator. All you need to do is give us your pass.

How to Avoid It[]

The easiest way to avoid this scam is to remember that Jagex moderators always have gold crown symbols before their names in chat, public or private. (Some scammers may be Ironmen or women in order to have a symbol next to their chat for credibility, but it will not be a crown.) If no gold crown is visible next to the name, they are not a Jagex moderator. Also, even if a gold crown is present, you are still able to report the Mod. Jagex staff will never ask you for your password no matter what, as stated on the website. Simply ignore the player after you've reported them, regardless of what they may tell you, and they will eventually give up and move on.
