Over time, Jagex responses to real world trading have included the banning of players who engage in such behavior and making in-game changes that make real world trading more difficult.

Jagex's first major move was splitting rune essence into two grades, pure and normal, on April 20, 2006. This was an attempt to purposely devalue normal essence, which bots mined. This actually caused the autoers to become members with stolen credit cards and gaining more profit.

There are two classes of real world traders: personal sellers and gold companies. The gold companies are run in sweatshops and often use macros, which is against RuneScape rules.

Jagex has responded to this by enacting mass bans of macro users and gold buyers on February 24, 2006, May 11, 2007, and June 4, 2007.

In November and December 2007, Jagex has also made changes like setting a limit of 3,000 coins to the Duel Arena and changing player killing, causing massive controversy.

On December 10, 2007, the Rants forum reached the record number of users online with over 1,300.
