Black mark system no longer exists due to an update.
This page is being preserved as a historical article.

The Black mark system was a system for Jagex to keep track of they way players behave in RuneScape. When players broke the Rules of Conduct, they were given a certain amount of black marks depending on the severity of the offence. For example, if a player broke Rule 1, that player generally received anywhere from 0.3 to 2 black marks. If a player were to break Rule 3, the player would receive many more black marks, possibly up to 5. If the player broke rule 7 or rule 12, the player generally received up to 9 black marks. More than 10 black marks warranted a permanent ban, while, under certain conditions, players could also be muted for breaking certain rules, such as Rule 1. However, black marks were able to be appealed through the website, under the "Appeal an offence/ban" section. If the appeals were successful, the player might be able to recover the banned account, although it may be permanently muted by Jagex instead.

The black mark system was removed by Jagex on 11 May 2009.
